Definition
Activation Rate measures the proportion of newly signed-up users who reach a meaningful moment of value — the "aha moment" — within a defined timeframe. This is the single most important metric for validating that your onboarding flow actually delivers value. A user who activates is significantly more likely to retain and eventually convert to paid. The activation event must be carefully chosen: it should correlate strongly with long-term retention.
Formula
How to measure
Define your activation event (e.g., completing first project, sending first message, making first trade). Track `activation_event` completion segmented by signup cohort. Measure within a fixed window (typically 1–7 days from signup). Use cohort analysis to track changes over time.
Industry benchmarks
Activation rates range from 30–60% within the first 7 days for well-optimized products. Below 20% typically indicates a serious onboarding problem. Best-in-class products achieve 60–80%.
